Released! we're waiting on some paperwork now and Jay will be able to go home at 1:00 or so

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Talked to my mom tonight and my dad had a few bites of jello to eat tonight and some sips of broth. He was able to get some exercise by taking about two steps to the chair in the corner of the room and took a seat. It sounds like his color is better, his energy has been pretty good and has taken just one pain pill. He hasn't napped all afternoon, so that may help him sleep better tonight. (And now it sounds like I'm talking about Henry...)
Still unclear on when dad can be discharged but maybe tomorrow afternoon
Andrew and i are back home now, my mom will stay the night in the hospital and my aunt judy will stay in a hotel in OKC
Jay says to everyone: Thanks for all the prayers, they worked like a charm.
Dad said when he first came out of anesthesia he asked "what are all these people doing in my bedroom?"
Dad will have to stand up once or twice this evening to get his blood circulating and then once he's home get on the treadmill for 10 minutes 5 times a day
His voice is a little deep and scratchy from the tube that was down his throat, but isn't feeling too much pain yet just some discomfort
Dad's been moved into his room and we've had a chance to talk. He's in pretty good spirits and is feeling OK
Dad got assigned a room and they just brought him in. My mom is in there now. It is a private room so she'll be able to stay overnight
Yay! Heard from the recovery nurse and Jay is out of surgery. I guess we can't see him now but maybe in about an hour
Dr. Wong said it would be about two hours and "don't watch the clock"
Heard from the doctor who said he thought he was able to successfully reconnect.... things. Don't need to know the details, but it was good news
We guess he'll be done between 11:30 and 12:30
Another call from James, the surgeon's nurse. They reached the prostate successfully and will be able to remove it as planned.
Just heard from the nurse. They were able to use the robot and everything has gone as expected so far. He said they weren't quite halfway done
It sounds like we'll get updates from a nurse who is in the OR. She will give my mom's cell phone a call. We'll see how that works
The surgeon is the head of urology for OU hospital. They intend to use a robot for the surgery and he's done 2,000 of these procedures
Jay came to the hospital at 5:30 this morning, got prepped at 7:30 and probably went into surgery around 8:30 Central Time

Updates

I'll post updates as we get information tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5. Maybe we won't get much to pass along and this will be for naught, but I'll give it a try.
